Ball Mill Lining Materials
Metal linings provide high strength and excellent wear resistance, making them ideal for ball mills processing hard materials such as ore and metal slag. These are currently the most widely used type in industrial applications.
High Manganese Steel Lining
Composition: 10%-14% manganese content, 1.0%-1.4% carbon content, austenitic steel structure.
Features: Excellent toughness with work hardening capability under strong impact or extrusion. Surface hardness increases significantly (from HB200 to HB500+) while maintaining core toughness. Superior impact resistance suitable for processing large materials or high-impact conditions in grate ball mills.
Limitations: Reduced wear resistance in low-impact, low-stress environments. Higher cost and poor welding performance with susceptibility to cracking.
Applicable Scenarios: Coarse and medium grinding stages, ball mills processing hard rocks including granite and iron ore.
High Chromium Cast Iron Lining
Composition: 15%-30% chromium, 2.0%-3.5% carbon, white cast iron structure with Cr7C3 hard phase.
Features: Extremely high hardness (HRC55-65) with wear resistance 3-5 times greater than high manganese steel. Excellent resistance to low stress sliding wear and better corrosion resistance for sulfur-containing and acidic materials.
Limitations: High brittleness with poor impact resistance, prone to breaking under high impact conditions.
Applicable Scenarios: Fine grinding stages, low impact conditions in overflow ball mills, processing medium hard materials like cement clinker and limestone.
Low Alloy Steel Lining
Composition: Alloy elements including Cr, Mo, Ni, and V (total content <5%) added to carbon steel, balanced through heat treatment (quenching + tempering).
Features: Excellent overall performance with hardness (HRC35-50) and toughness between high manganese steel and high chromium cast iron. Composition can be customized for specific working conditions. Lower cost than high chromium cast iron with better welding performance.
Common Types: Chromium-molybdenum steel for superior wear resistance and hardenability in large-size linings. Nickel-hard cast iron with 3%-5% nickel content offering high hardness (HRC50-60) and improved toughness.
Applicable Scenarios: Medium impact and wear conditions in general ball mills for mineral processing and building materials industries.
